Pointer targets meet a minimum size or spacing

Usually highHow serious this usually is when it goes wrong. Not a score.

The guideline

Make every pointer target at least 24 by 24 CSS pixels — the WCAG 2.2 Level AA floor — and design to 44 by 44 wherever the control carries weight, which is the Level AAA figure and also what Apple (44pt) and Google Material (48dp) ask for. Where a target genuinely has to stay smaller, take the spacing route rather than lowering the bar: position undersized targets so that a 24-pixel diameter circle centred on each does not intersect its neighbour's. Measure in CSS pixels, not device pixels, and do not count zoom — CSS pixel size does not change when the user zooms, so a target that is only large enough at 200% has not met the criterion.

Common failures

  • Tap targets on mobile are smaller than 44×44px or placed too close together.
